Knit the Bridge

Earlier this month, a group of 1,900 (!!) volunteers from Pittsburgh and the surrounding area covered the Andy Warhol/7th Street Bridge with 508 knitted, crocheted, and woven blankets. I heard about the project, called Knit the Bridge, a few months ago, and I checked out the finished installation yesterday. It is gorgeous, especially lit by the late afternoon sun, and I couldn't be more excited to see community arts initiatives taking place here in Pittsburgh. So awesome.

  1. To start with, I love the pattern on your dress! It's so summery and I love the colors. And I love how they play with the colors of the blankets.
This bridge project really is pretty. I've been seeing a lot of these public yarn bombings lately, and generally I can't make up my mind about whether I like them or not because I just keep thinking how easy it would be for them to get dirty, even though I love street art as a rule. But this one really does look cool! I hope it stays in good shape for a long time.

    1. When I saw this project, I definitely had my doubts about the blankets staying clean, so I did a little research. The blankets are only staying up from August 12th to September 6th. They're made of acrylic (so they don't absorb water), and after they're taken down, they'll be cleaned and donated to local animal shelters, senior homes, etc. I feel like the organizers did a pretty great job planning the whole thing. Blankets that originated in the community will ultimately be returned to the community after spending a month or so snazzing up the bridge!

And thanks for the super fantastic comments. It's really nice to "chat" again. :)
