Candy-striped

I had this ensemble from the Met on my mind when I found this striped blouse on ebay. I don't usually buy reproductions, since what I love most about vintage clothes are their long histories, but I couldn't quite resist the ruffled sleeves and red and white stripes. Plus, the blouse was made using vintage fabric and a vintage pattern, AND it fits into the carnival theme that's been inspiring all my outfits lately, so I'll give it a pass.

Over the weekend, I went to a much-raved-about flea market in Tarentum. I was bummed I didn't have more luck there, but I did snag this clutch embroidered with "Philippines 1945" and the name "Julia." Maybe it was a gift from a woman's boyfriend in the military? Or a honeymoon souvenir? Or something else entirely? Regardless, it charmed me in the way that only pretty, old things can, and it seemed appropriate for it to make its blog debut in front of Phipps Conservatory's beautiful greenhouses.

Outfit details:
1930's reproduction blouse via ebay
1930's skirt purchased at a local antique store
1945 souvenir clutch from the Philippines purchased at a flea market in Tarentum, PA
Coach belt
Seychelles heels

  1. That blouse is so lovely! It looks great on you. Definitely worth making an exception! I have a blouse cut from an old Victorian pattern and I really like wearing it as it has really nice detailing and design but it's not as fragile (or precious!) as the real item would be. The outfit from the Met is beautiful...

  3. That blouse is adorable, I love the ruffley sleeve and the red/white stripe will be perfect for summer! I so enjoy the mystery behind things like your clutch, sometimes it can be frustrating when the details don't add up but it's always fun wondering. :)

    1. haha! Usually my estate sale dreams are more like nightmares...

It has been forever since we've seen one another, and I don't know about you, but we haven't been having any luck lately.

By the way, those Brazil-themed 1940's shorts in your ebay shop are fabulous! (All I want to wear lately are rompers and high-waisted shorts, but I'm not 100% sure that's appropriate for class. ha!)

  7. Nailed it on modernizing your inspiration shot, which is stunning by the way.

I'm also a little obsessed with that clutch. I went to the Philippines and everything is SO kitschy and adorable like that and now I'm off to scour the Internet for a similar one haha.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving such a nice comment. I plan to dedicate at least a half-an afternoon to procrastinating from my job and reading your blog. Where are you studying in Western PA? I went to Penn State (and PSU Altoona) so I'm a big fan of any and all things Pennsylvania :)

    1. I was irrationally excited when I found that clutch, especially since it only cost about $3!

Though I never would have admitted it back in high school, Pennsylvania is pretty awesome. I'm currently studying at the University of Pittsburgh, but I also grew up in the suburbs. I feel like Pittsburgh has a lot of great stuff going on right now--museums, art galleries, new restaurants--and the row houses I walk by in the various neighborhoods are second to none. My brother went to Penn State, and State College has its charms, too!
